The Mini 1275 GT was introduced in 1969 as a sportier alternative to the standard Mini models, replacing the Mini Cooper S in British Leyland’s lineup. Designed as part of the Mini Clubman range, it featured a squared-off front end, distinguishing it from the classic round-nose Minis. The 1275 GT was powered by a 1,275 cc A-Series engine, offering improved performance and torque over the standard Mini 1000. Although it was not as fast as the outgoing Cooper S, it was more affordable to produce and maintain, making it a popular choice. It also came with a rev counter, wider wheels, and a distinctive black stripe decal, adding to its sporty appeal. The 1275 GT remained in production until 1980, when it was phased out in favour of newer models, but it remains a beloved classic among Mini enthusiasts for its unique styling and character.
We are delighted to offer this 1978 Mini 1275 GT in Reynard metallic with Sorrel cloth interior. First registered in August 1978, it was supplied by Dormobile Limited in Folkstone and has had 6 former keepers. Subject to a comprehensive restoration back in 2023, it was returned to its factory original appearance. However, under that standard 1275 GT body is a car that has been subject to a series of subtle performance enhancements. We are obliged to our vendor for the following breakdown of the modifications:-
“Head off MG metro and has been ported and polished with bigger valves installed - the original head is with the car
Straight cut gearbox
New twin SU’s were fitted
Fast road cam
Upgraded fuel system
Race alternator
Upgraded cooling system
Electronic ignition
Vented and grooved front discs
Hi lo suspension”
In his tenure the vendor has gone on to replace the timing chain and fit a lightened flywheel from Mini Sport Ltd. There is a large bundle of invoices that come with the car, mainly for parts and work relating to the recent restoration.
Reynard is a fabulous and rare colour for a 1275 GT and one that suits the cheery, fun character of this little Mini. Save for sitting a little lower, the external appearance is as you would have expected it to have left the factory in ’78, right down to the distinctive Denovo wheel trims and Leyland branded mudflaps. It’s nice to see vented sills and not over-sills hiding rot. A lovely touch is that the vendor has gone to the trouble of sourcing some metal number plates with raised letters, even better that they are white and yellow as they should be. Inside, the factory standard theme continues. The very Seventies seat fabric is clean and free from any obvious damage and the door cards and dash plastics are in good order. Pleasingly, previous owners have even resisted the draw of an aftermarket steering wheel or gearknob. A sensible addition in the boot is a battery isolator switch. Under the bonnet the engine presents beautifully - the sort of engine bay you’d be proud to show off at any meet.
The car comes with V5C, current and a previous MOT certificate, a bundle of invoices, heritage certificate and some period Mini brochures.
Whilst this may not be a car for the Mini purist, to us it represents a win-win - nostalgia-inducing factory aesthetics teamed with a set of mechanicals that have been upgraded to produce the widest grin on a winding road or, dare we say it, a track. Don’t take our word for it - come and view it yourself. We doubt you’ll be disappointed.
