The Australian-built Mini Moke has a unique and colourful history that distinguishes it from its British origins. Originally designed in the UK in the late 1950s as a lightweight, military-grade utility vehicle based on the Mini platform, the Moke proved unsuitable for rough terrain and was instead marketed as a civilian leisure vehicle. Production moved to Australia in 1966, where the Moke found a new identity, particularly suited to the country’s warm climate and rugged landscapes. Australian Mokes were built more robustly than their British counterparts, featuring larger wheels, stronger suspension, and eventually, a galvanised body to combat rust. Produced until 1981 in Australia, the Moke became a cultural icon, beloved for its quirky charm and beach-going practicality. Its legacy lives on through a dedicated fan base and sporadic revival attempts, solidifying its place in Australian motoring history.

We are delighted to offer this 1977 Leyland Mini Moke in white with black interior. First imported into the UK in 2021, it has only one former keeper since arrival. It would have initially been supplied with a 998cc engine but at some point this car has been upgraded to a 1275cc Mini motor - more than enough to make the featherweight Moke feel decidedly spritely. The engine runs on unleaded fuel.

The car presents beautifully, having benefitted from a full restoration in 2019. The white paint is set off by the distinctive black “roo bars” that featured on the desirable Californian edition models. The theme is continued with a smart set of Minilite-style wheels wrapped in fresh-looking Nankang tyres all round. Moke-branded sill protectors and mudflaps complete the look. Mokes are at their best in the sun but this is the UK and it’s only sensible to have some good weather protection. Fortunately, this example comes with a brand new roof that not only looks great in a deep red but also fits snugly, keeping out the worst of the weather. Slung underneath is a stainless steel exhaust. The interior is very smart with freshly upholstered seats finished with white piping and embroidered logos on the backrests. Rather sensibly, it has been fitted with a Fusion stereo system, Fusion being noted marine audio experts and suppliers of water resistant equipment. With safety in mind, there are four inertia reel seatbelts attached to the sturdy looking roll bar and a blower for the windscreen.

We’re huge fans of the Moke here at Manor Park Classics - few cars are as much fun at sensible speeds on a sunny day. This really is a lovely example that has been both nicely restored and sensibly upgraded and, with a very sensible reserve, it represents an opportunity not to be missed.
