1937 Riley 12/4 Lynx South Africa

Private : £33,500

Sellers description

The Riley Lynx Sprite 1.5-litre twin cam 12/4 engine was hugely impressive for its day. Built into this luxury 4-seater 4-door sports-tourer road car, it was ideal for the performance enthusiasts who required a car that could also accommodate a family.

In it's 'TT' guise the Sprite more than upheld Riley's sporting traditions, winning the Ulster Tourist Trophy in both 1935 and 1936.

This all original 1936 Riley Lynx Sprite was originally registered in England in 1936, shortly after the Olympia Motor Show in London which showcased the new 1937 model of the Lynx Sprite. A genuine Lynx Sprite can be identified by the ‘SS’ prefix to the chassis number.

She has been owned and maintained by the current owner, Mr Roy Jones, for the past 40 years, who has kept her in top condition for regular enjoyment and showing off to local and international pre-war Riley enthusiasts.

Roy bought the car in the mid 1980's in the UK and shipped it to South Africa, to add to his already impressive collection of Rileys, all of which were maintained and rebuilt by Roy in his well equipped workshop, which also includes a wealth of original Riley parts and spares.

A special selection of spares have been chosen to be given to the new owner. Note the list of parts and spares at the end of this article.

Approximately 20 years ago, Roy replaced parts of the body framework with the original Ashwood spec . All framework still in good condition was retained and reinforced.

The car has never been in an accident, and still has the original engraved body number plate in place.

The body work, interior leather, hood, tonneau cover and side screens are all in very good working condition.

This fine example of retained historical beauty is a must see for collectors and enthusiasts wanting to own one of the legends of the 1930's luxury vehicle market.

If you are travelling from abroad to South Africa, you will be welcomed at the airport and returned to the airport or alternate accommodation after the viewing.

*Shipping from South Africa to England estimated GBP 3 500.
