Sellers description

1933 Riley Nine Lynx with Pre-war competition history

The replacement for the Nine four seat tourer came in the form of the Lynx, which debuted at the 1932 Motor Show. Also available with a choice of two six cylinder engines, the new Lynx was a most attractive motor car with sporting lines and a hood which, when folded, was concealed under a hinged panel, making for a very smart appearance.

Today, the ‘disappearing hood’ Lynx is highly sought after, as the model was only produced for the 1933 season, as the Lynx was continued from late 1933 with slightly larger 4 door coachwork.

As with many Rileys, Lynxes were popular with sporting motorists and a number saw action in rallies and reliability trials.

The smart red example we present for sale here has a most interesting history. First registered by the Riley Works on 19th May 1933 with the Coventry registration KV 5212 and was acquired by its first private owner,  Mr A.P. McGowran, the following month. In his hands the car was very successfully campaigned until 1939 and again immediately after the war, before he finally parted with the car in 1947. The next owner kept the car until 1962 then followed a further six owners, with the car ending up a a ‘basket case’.

By 1989, the Riley’s fortunes improved, as the next owner undertook a comprehensive rebuild before passing the car on three years later. Another change of ownership saw the car returned to its correct configuration and by early 2005 the Riley was in the hands of the present owner, who has continued to lavish much care and attention on it.

The engine was rebuilt in 2006, with a Hamlin counterbalanced crankshaft, Merlin rods and Omega pistons, Newman cams and fitted with shell bearings (BMC ‘B’ Series MGA type)

The flywheel has also been lightened. At the same time, the gearbox was rebuilt and a higher ratio CWP fitted (5.0:1)

Much additional work and regular maintenance  has been carried out which is all detailed in the extensive documentation supplied.

The car has a good hood, sidescreens and tonneau cover. The dark red leather trim is in good order, looking ‘just right’. Now displaying a pleasant patina, this Lynx is steeped in history and will appeal to a discerning enthusiast, as it is a real delight to drive, feeling extremely responsive with the accurate handling with one expects from a properly cared for Riley.

This 1933 Riley Nine Lynx was featured in a double-page spread in 'Classic & Sports Car' January 2013 and also and was the subject of a extensive article in The Riley Register Bulletin September 2016 with lots of pre-war trials photogrpahs.
