Sellers description
1933 Riley Nine Kestrel
Riley pioneered the ‘fastback’ design with the Kestrel, which made its debut at the 1932 Motor Show powered by the 6/12 engine and a 9hp version was soon to follow.
The striking ‘Aerolined’ coachwork won many admirers and within a couple of years several other manufacturers were offering saloons with sleeker streamlined design.
The Riley Kestrel was to evolve through several permutations and with engine options from 9hp up to 16hp, being available until 1939 by which time the Company had come under the control of the Nuffield group.
The Kestrel we offer here is a Nine, having been first registered in December 1933, making it a 1934 model. The subject of considerable restoration work which was completed around 1997, it presents very well with the two-tone paintwork further enhancing the delightful styling. Fitted with a later Merlin engine, benefiting from a stronger crankshaft, the car has the ‘all helical’ manual gearbox.
There is a list of previous owners and extensive details of work carried out over the years which makes interesting reading.
One of the most sought after of Riley models, these earlier Kestrels are a joy to behold, looking ‘just right’ from every angle.
Shod with Blockley tyres and sporting the correct Kestrel mascot, this extremely attractive Riley certainly attracts attention wherever it goes.
