1988 was the first full year that Jaguar offered a factory-built convertible version of the XJ-S, prior convertibles were third-party conversions (like Hess & Eisenhardt) making the convertibles from this year a milestone in Jaguar’s history and desirable for collectors.
These stylish grand tourers, powered by the legendary 5.3 litre V12 engine, deliver luxury, power and prestige with an exceptionally refined ride that was designed for long distance touring. Few cars at the XJ-S price point (then or now) offer such a highly engineered V12 engine.
The comfortable ride is made all the more enjoyable by the cabin; the leather, wood and layout are all a testament to classic British craftsmanship, design and style.
While controversial at launch, the XJ-S has aged gracefully, the long bonnet, wide stance, and elegant proportions make them a real head-turner with an incredible road presence; but to make an XJ-S really interesting you’d need to find a low mileage example, in super condition, with a strong service history and a rare colour combination – and this car ticks all the boxes.
Finished in Glacier White over Tobacco Leather with a brown hood, its incredibly well spec’d even by today’s standards and must have been the height of motoring sophistication in 1988:

An original UK supplied car it spent some time in Germany returning to the UK in 2020 and has retained a super file including details of works carried out to the value of €12,254 during a four year period whilst in Europe, including:
· Power steering overhaul, ABS hydraulic system flushed, vented and refilled, all new heating and coolant hoses replaced, amongst other work carried out in 2018 to the sum of €2,982
· Full brake overhaul carried out in 2014 to the sum of €1,581
· Engine compression test and engine work carried out in 2016 to the sum of €4,425
Since it’s return to the UK it’s been part of a private collection, carefully stored and maintained with advisory free MOT passes in 2024 and more recently May 2025.
Running, driving and stopping well with the recent advisory free MOT pass, it presents extremely well inside, outside and underneath.
XJ-S’s are widely regarded to be currently undervalued, and with the resurgence of interest in Jaguars heritage, are tipped to be great investments – the trick is to find one in this condition, with this spec, rare and desirable colours, good history and crucially low mileage; trust us, they don’t come along often!
