The Land Rover Half Ton Lightweight, officially known as the Land Rover Series IIA and later Series III Airportable, was developed in the 1960s for the British military. Designed to be light enough for air transport, particularly by the Westland Wessex helicopter, it was based on the civilian Series IIA 88-inch model but modified with a narrower track, detachable body panels, and lighter components to reduce weight. Introduced in 1968, it retained the rugged reliability of the standard Land Rover but was optimized for mobility and versatility in military operations. Despite efforts to meet the airborne weight target, the Lightweight still exceeded the original limit but was accepted due to its modular design and utility. It remained in military service for several decades and has since become a collectible classic among Land Rover enthusiasts.

We are pleased to offer this 1974 Land Rover Series III 88” Half Ton in Red Arrows support vehicle livery. We have the BMIHT factory record for the vehicle, indicating that it was a RHD home market car supplied to the Central Army Vehicle Depot in Derbyshire and originally Bronze Green. It appears to have left the military and been registered in 1988. Our vendor bought it in 2015 and undertook his own comprehensive restoration. If the paintjob is familiar, that’s because it is a copy of the support vehicles that were used by the Royal Air Force Red Arrows during the 1980s. We think it looks fantastic and there is no doubt it would attract a lot attention at shows or out on the road.

The interior has been left green and is fitted with two front seats and two benches in the rear, all in nice condition. There is also a flare box in the back for some additional storage and some old black pressed plates with a military registration number which could be used at shows. With safety in mind, there is a fire extinguisher and inertia reel front seatbelts.

The car runs and starts but we believe the steering will require some attention before the car can be driven safely. It comes with V5C, heritage certificate and some old MOTs.

Some cars just make us smile and this bright red Land Rover is one of them. That’s hardly surprising when you consider that it merges two iconic British institutions – the Land Rover and the Red Arrows. One thing is for sure, this is the type of car that will be welcomed with open arms at any military show or car meet and, offered with no reserve, it represents a great opportunity to join in the fun.

Please note: The vehicle is recorded as a Category C Insurance Loss “Vehicle extensively damaged but repairable – Insurer decided not to repair” on 10th May 2007. However, the HPI also records a VIC Pass on 9th December 2010 noting the car as “substantially repaired and/or accident damaged: identity checked on 09/12/2010”.
