The Triumph TR4, produced by the British manufacturer Standard-Triumph, was introduced in 1961 as a successor to the TR3A. Designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, the TR4 marked a shift toward a more modern and aggressive aesthetic, featuring a wider body, improved cabin space, and amenities such as roll-up windows and an optional hardtop with a unique removable roof panel - an early precursor to the Targa top. Under the hood, it retained the TR3A’s robust 2.1-litre four-cylinder engine, but performance and handling were enhanced with updated suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The TR4 remained in production until 1965, when it was replaced by the TR4A, which introduced independent rear suspension. Revered for its classic styling and spirited driving experience, the TR4 holds a respected place in British sports car history.

We are pleased to offer this 1964 Triumph TR4 in red with black interior. First registered in January 1964, it is a UK RHD example supplied with overdrive. Despite its 60 plus years, it has had only 4 previous owners, our vendor having enjoyed it since 2018. It comes with a large history file, including a bundle of MOT certificates going all the way back to 1989. Another large bundle of invoices for parts and maintenance dates back even further to the early Eighties. Since our vendor took custody he has spent a considerable amount of money - the invoices total over £13,000. A lot of work took place in 2018/19 at Classic Cars in Cardiff. That work included fitting an aftermarket Surrey Top, retrimming the interior including new carpets, wooden fascia and door caps, new steering wheel and boss, new retro radio, new headlamps and side lamps, new door mirrors and aerial, engine tune up, new SU carbs, new radiator, new plastic gearbox tunnel cover, new Revotec electric fan, new brake master cylinder, new clutch hydraulics, new gearbox cover, new window regulators, new side window glasses, door seals and interior door handles, substantial rewiring and new battery. These are just the highlights and we would always encourage you to review the history yourself.

There’s something just right about a red sports car and it’s a colour that just works on the TR4. There are some areas of corrosion, in particular around the windscreen frame, and we would urge you to carefully study the photographs or even better take a look in person. The Surrey Top is a great addition - as well as being more sturdy than the usual roof and frame, it allows for a heated rear window so that the little Triumph can be enjoyed in all weathers. The centre section is soft vinyl and appears in good order and undamaged. The boot rack is another handy addition. Given the recent expense the interior presents well. One of the seat backs needs resecuring but the piped vinyl is nice and is free from any obvious rips and tears. The burr walnut of the dash and door cappings injects an element of British style and class to the cabin. Anyone who has tried to reach for a ticket whilst wearing a static 3-point seatbelt will appreciate the addition of inertia reel items for extra convenience.

The TR4 comes with V5C, current and old MOTs, a substantial bundle of invoices, some old registration documentation, an old purchase invoice and an owner’s handbook.

Nothing beats a classic British sports car burbling down a country lane in the Summer sunshine and, currently, these TR4s represent something of a bargain. Our vendor has spent a huge amount of money in recent years, so many potential jobs have been covered but, with there still being some areas which could be improved, there remains scope to add value.
