Sellers description

  • Early all matching number example including matching cylinder head
  • Number 338 off the production line with incredibly low mileage
  • Original right hand drive, manual UK supplied example
  • Featured in Philip Porters ‘Original Jaguar E-Type’ book

Introduced in 3.8 litre form in 1961, the Jaguar E-Type caused a sensation when it appeared with instantly classic lines and 150mph top speed. While, inevitably, the car's stupendous straight-line performance and gorgeous looks grabbed the headlines, there was a lot more to the E-Type beneath the skin. The newcomer's design owed much to that of the racing D-Type and, indeed, the E-Type would be one of the last great sports cars developed directly from a successful competition ancestor. Just as in the D-Type, a monocoque tub formed the main body/chassis structure while a tubular space frame extended forwards to support the engine. The latter was the same 3.8 litre, triple-carburettor, 'S' unit first offered as an option on the preceding XK150. With a claimed 265 horsepower on tap, the E-Type's performance did not disappoint. Firstly, because it weighed around 500lb less than the XK150 and secondly, because aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer used experience gained with the D-Type to create one of the most elegant and efficient shapes ever to grace a motor car.

This stunning, early example of the gorgeous Series I coupé is offered in Carmine Red with black leather trim and we are informed is number 338 off the production line. It was purchased by its first owner, W A Whitehead, on 18th April 1962 from Sanderson & Holmes Jaguar in Derby. An incredibly early 3.8 coupé, this car is displaying just 58,000 on the odometer which we believe to be accurate given record of past MoT test certificates spanning some 47 years. Still boasting all matching numbers including engine, gearbox and cylinder head, this is a real collector’s example. The only change to the Jaguar supplied Heritage Certificate is that in the late 90’s the car was extensively restored and colours changed from the original Opalescent Silver with red trim to Carmine Red with black.

The car was then featured in Phillip Porters book, ‘Original Jaguar E-Type’ a restorer’s guide to 100% originality, a copy of which is found with the car. Offered today in great condition throughout and showing a very slight patina for a car that has been clearly cherished and maintained with a no expense spared philosophy. The history file includes 47 years of MoT test certificates, detailed ownership history, invoices and an original E-Type handbook coupled with the original tools and jack.

Cars with these credentials do not appear on the open market very often, an early UK supplied right hand drive car with matching numbers in such condition with low mileage, on the cusp of Jaguars 60th anniversary in 2021 and with prices tipped to rise, this presents an opportunity to collectors, investors or sheer enthusiasts like no other.
