1960 MGA 1600 Roadster

The replacement for the MG TF appeared in September 1955 in the form of the curvaceous all new MGA. The early versions were powered by a 1500cc engine, however, this was increased to 1.6 litre in May 1959 along with the fitment of disc brakes at the front.

Under the up-to-the minute styling, the MGA still retained a separate chassis which offered exceptional rigidity. Other variants of the MGA included the high performance Twin Cam and the 1600 Mk II and De Luxe. All models were available in fixed head coupe and roadster form. In total, 101,081 MGAs were produced with production finally ceasing in July 1962 with the arrival of the MGB. As with the last of the ‘T’ Series the vast majority were exported and only 5,869 cars were sold on the UK home market.

Always a sought-after model, the MGA had great appeal with its rugged engine and drivetrain, excellent handling, sleek styling and top speed of around 100 mph. Today, the appeal is as strong as ever and, as with all MGs, support and spares availability are excellent.

The example we offer here is a 1600 Roadster of 1960 manufacture. For the past ten years it has formed part of a small collection of MGs in the West Country and has been used sparingly in fine weather. The subject of a restoration to a very high standard in the 1990’s following its import and conversion to right hand drive, much care has been lavished upon the car over the ensuing years, which is evident by the exceptional condition it is presented in. Finished in Iris Blue, the MG has its original engine and sits on chrome wire wheels, which are shod with radial tyres. There are two files of paperwork, which include the correct Driver’s Handbook and a vast number of bills appertaining to the restoration.
