Sellers description

1953 Wolseley 4/44 Saloon

Estimate: £3,000-4,000

Believed to be the second earliest car currently on the register; beautiful patina in and out; recent overhaul to the brakes

The Wolseley Four Forty-Four, a car that ‘brings the pride of Wolseley ownership within the reach of a wider public – the experienced practical motorist who demands something better than a large scale production car without paying a high price.’ Well, that’s what the poster said, and they wouldn’t be wrong. A luxury car back then for a fraction of the price of others. Still an element of luxury now of course but perhaps more trendy than gentlemanly these days.

First registered on the 14th September 1953, so it has just celebrated its 67th birthday, which also, we are informed, makes it the 2nd earliest 4/44 known to the Wolseley Register.

First registered as DEB 777 to a Cambridgeshire owner, according to some early paperwork in the file, it was insured for £850 in the early days. Not much is known of its mid-life but it appears to have gone through at least three other pairs of hands up to the late 1980s. During this period, in 1983, registration was changed to VFL 224, which is still what it holds today. Appearing to stay in the Cambs/Northants area for the rest of its life until 2009 when it was registered to our vendor, a local private Herefordian. An old V5 is on file and he current V5C seems to be missing but it wouldn’t be too hard to get a replacement done through the DVLA.

We are told it has recently had the brakes attended to and it drove about 40 miles to the sale with no trouble. The back seat and boot are absolutely rammed with spares, from wheel hubs to rubber seals and gaskets. See the photos for more detail. The car definitely has a lovely original feel inside and out and obviously is not perfect but character, it has bundles of…
