Sellers description

1932 Austin 7 Box Saloon

In single family ownership for 70 years; older restoration in good order throughout; recently overhauled replacement engine; original engine included First registered in Wolverhampton in June 1932, this Austin Seven Box Saloon has been in our vendor’s family for a very long time – 70 years to be exact. His great-uncle, Fred Allsopp, acquired the car from Richards Garage in Yardley, Birmingham, way back in 1949, the original purchase invoice showing that it cost him £55. Fred used the car until he gave up driving in 1968, various old MOTs and invoices showing usage and upkeep throughout this time including an engine rebuild in 1956 which cost £5 6s – those were the days! The car was then parked up in a nice dry garage until our vendor’s father inherited it in the 1980s. Soon got going again, it was used briefly by our vendor before being put back into storage. Some time in the 1990s he and dad decided to restore the car, as shown in photos on file, tackling the body and the chassis plus some of the mechanical aspects before the project ran out of steam.

About three years ago the vendor decided that it was time the job got finished so that his dad, now in his 80s, would at least get to drive it again. The cylinder head was overhauled with new valves and head gasket, new clutch linings were fitted along with a 6v battery and a fabric front universal joint (invoices on file). Only lightly used since the restoration was completed, JW 1817 is still on its original (transferable) number plate and comes with sundry spares including its original engine although the condition of this is unknown. Other documentation includes a 1948 Pitman book on the Austin 7, a buff logbook from 1964, insurance documents from 1949, an old spare parts catalogue from what looks like the 1950s or ‘60s and what could be an original lubrication chart. On the market for the first time in 70 years, this charming Seven now needs an enthusiastic new owner who can give it the more regular exercise it deserves.
