1926 Vauxhall 14/40 ‘LM’ Princeton Tourer

The Vauxhall 14/40 made its debut at the 1921 London Motor Show, with the first deliveries reaching the public the following year. Designed by Clarence King, this new model featured a 2.3 litre 4-cylinder engine mounted in-unit with a three-speed gearbox. 

Six models were listed, including two and four door Tourers, three styles of saloon, plus Landaulette and Coupe models.

1924 saw the introduction of the improved ‘LM’ Series, with a higher compression engine now developing 40 bhp. A four-speed gearbox was now fitted, as were wire wheels in place of the previous disc type. As with the larger Vauxhall models, the 14/40 was much favoured in the Antipodes, as well as many other parts of the Empire where road conditions demanded a sturdily built motor car.

This 1926 14/40 Princeton Tourer was one of 800 exported to Australia in that year.

Fast forward to 1990 and the car was sold in dismantled form to New Zealand, where it’s new owner totally rebuilt it. There followed a number of rallies and events before the car finally returned to the UK in 2001. By 2015 the car was in the hands of the present owner who has spent some £25,000 on it, with work carried out by well-regarded specialists. This work has included a brake overhaul, full rewire, complete mechanical rebuild including a carburettor overhaul. Since completion of this work, less than 500 miles have been covered - journeys have included competing in the Beamish Reliability Run, trips from Dorset to Cornwall and also the hill climb at Kop Hill. With its polished aluminium coachwork, this Vintage Vauxhall has considerable character and eagerly awaits a new custodian for further adventures.
