description
Porsche Club Great Britain (PCGB) was founded by some like-minded enthusiasts in 1961 to enjoy and celebrate the 356 which, race cars apart, was the only Porsche production model at that time. Thirty 356 owners attended the Club's founding meeting in 1961, but none could have dreamed of the future that lay ahead and by Christmas 1962, 174 members had joined.
Since then, the Club has grown from being a kitchen table hobby to the professional organisation it is today, and in the process, has regularly outgrown its office accommodation as the staff needed to run it have increased.
In the 1980s the hub of Club activity was the then General Secretary Roy Gilham’s home at Raisin’s Hill in Pinner. Membership increased exponentially during that decade and the decision was made to acquire a dedicated office and staff when Roy made the move to Gloucestershire. So Ayton House in Northleach was purchased and the Club’s first computer installed.
As numbers continued to grow during ‘90s, it became clear that the Northleach accommodation was insufficient and the Board took the farsighted decision to purchase Cornbury House. After fitting out half the floor area, we moved in 1996, knowing there was scope for expansion in the coming decade. The rest of the building was brought into use in 2001 and then the whole building remodelled as the Club membership grew.
Cornbury House now houses the administrative staff alongside the Club Shop and the Archive. It provides space for meetings and displays, as well as making for an ideal destination for members visiting this most attractive part of the country. Regular monthly Open Days are held for the enjoyment of the members.
Today PCGB is now the largest officially recognised Porsche Club in Europe with a membership in excess of 16,000. There are more regional activities, model type registers, motorsport, national and international events than at any time in our history. We also publish monthly a high quality magazine (Porsche Post).
It goes without saying that new members are always most welcome.
