The Renault 5 GT Turbo, introduced in 1985, was a high-performance version of the second-generation Renault 5, or Super Cinq, designed to compete in the growing hot hatch market of the 1980s. Powered by a 1.4-litre inline-four engine with a Garrett T2 turbocharger, it produced 115 horsepower, delivering thrilling performance in a lightweight package. This compact car gained a reputation for its nimble handling and impressive speed, making it a favourite among enthusiasts. Its aggressive styling, with flared arches, sporty bumpers, and unique decals, set it apart from its base model counterpart. The GT Turbo achieved significant success both on the road and in motorsport, especially in rallying, where its agility shone. By the time production ended in 1991, the Renault 5 GT Turbo had cemented its place as one of the iconic hot hatches of its era.

We are pleased to offer this Lot comprising of three project Renault 5 GT Turbos. The first, and the one that in our opinion could be the strongest example, is a 1989 Phase 2 example in Electric Blue metallic with black sports cloth. Forming part of a deceased estate, we believe that the car was last on the road around 2016 and has been garage-stored since then. Needless to say, we haven’t tried to start the engine and, externally, we have left it in “barn-find” condition as it came out of the garage. It seems remarkably complete, particularly the tricky to find interior parts and handsome alloy wheels, however, we would always suggest with any project car that you come to see it and make your own mind up as to the condition. It comes with V5C, a bundle old MOTs and a few invoices.

The second is a 1988 model in Tungsten metallic with black sports cloth. Having been off the road for a similar time to the blue car, we have also treated this as a non-runner. There are numerous areas of corrosion to the body, particularly to the windscreen surround, and it is being offered as a comprehensive parts car to accompany ‘A14 DPF’. However, we do not profess to be Renault 5 restoration experts and your view on its viability as a project car may differ from ours - once again we would recommend coming to one of our viewing days and making your own mind up. The interior does seem pretty complete. Again there is a V5C and a bundle of old MOTs but this one comes with a sheaf of invoices all the way back to the early Nineties, suggesting it had a few choice modifications such as a big bore exhaust and lowering springs.

Finally, we have a true parts car. In Tungsten and without an engine, most of the interior is there and the boot is full of further parts. There is no V5C with this one or any other documents. The glass is in but the front screen is cracked.

With its boosty little engine, the GT Turbo offered a hugely appealing hot hatch experience that was quite different from its normally-aspirated contemporaries such as the 205 GTi and Fiesta XR2i. It’s no wonder that 40 years on it still has a loyal and enthusiastic following. This package represents a fantastic opportunity to take on a rewarding project with the additional confidence of having not one but two parts cars to provide ready access to many of those hard to find bits that can bring a project to a premature halt. The fact that all of this is offered with no reserve is the icing in the cake.
