The second-generation Toyota Celica Supra, produced from 1982 to 1986 (known as the A60 series), marked a significant leap forward in performance, technology, and styling. Built on a longer and wider version of the Celica platform, this generation was powered by a 2.8-litre inline-six engine - initially the 5M-GE - which delivered strong performance for its class. Toyota emphasised a more aggressive design with pop-up headlights, flared wheel arches, and a sleeker profile, distinguishing it further from the standard Celica. Technological advancements like independent rear suspension, digital instrumentation, and an optional limited-slip differential showcased Toyota’s growing focus on blending comfort with driver engagement. The second-gen Celica Supra helped establish the car as a legitimate contender in the international sports coupe market and laid the foundation for the Supra’s eventual split from the Celica nameplate in 1986.
We are pleased to offer this 1985 Toyota Celica Supra in red with grey cloth interior. First registered in August 1985, it has had 7 former keepers. Bought as a project following lockdown, the vendor has decided he doesn’t have time to restore two Supras (yes, he has two A60s!) and he’s letting someone else finish this one off.
The rich, deep red of this Supra suits it perfectly, particularly when it is set off by the gloss black bumpers and trim. It needs the side and sill trims to complete the exterior but the rest of the trim seems pretty much there. The wheels would benefit from a refurb to take them to the next level but they don’t seem battered or heavily corroded. The interior looks original and again requires a few details to finish off. One A-pillar trim is missing, the other a bit wavy and there are some little trim bits here and there that could be tidied. However, this is still a very nice cabin with a dash that’s seems remarkably free from cracks and, most amazingly, houses a full digital instrument panel that appears to be functioning without obvious issue - peak 1980s, we would say! As with any project, even one that is as far down the road to completion as this, we would always recommend viewing first hand so that you can make your own mind up as to what needs doing.
We have driven the Toyota for our short, low speed video and it fired up on the button, revved smoothly and changed gear smoothly without any thunks or unusual noises. We all love pop-up headlights and we’re pleased to report that the Supra’s worked without issue.
The Celica Supra is an exceedingly rare car in 2025, with howmanyleft.co.uk recording only 31 road-registered examples, and one that creates a stir wherever it goes. It would no doubt be hugely satisfying to finish these last few jobs and bask in the adoration at all the Japanese shows. If you miss this, the wait for the next one could be long.
