A legendary Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTi with a massive history and only 69,499 miles.

EQUIPMENT
Radiator grille with red ornamental surround and GTi inscription, front spoiler, air blade on driver’s wiper, black side stripes, wider black wheel arches, black surround on rear window, laminated windscreen, internal door mirror adjustment, intermittent wash/wipe, cigar lighter, front door pockets, sports steering wheel, golf ball gear knob, on-board computer, fuel economy gauge, twin tone horn, rev counter, trip mileage recorder.

EXTERIOR
Described by many as the ultimate hatchback this standard MK1 VW Golf GTi is finished in the classic factory Mars Red, (Code LA3A), and maintains a deep uniform shine. The body trim, rubbers, side decals, badges and light lenses are remarkably preserved and sharp. There is a small mark to the nearside front plastic wheel arch trim and bumper barely worthy of a mention. The factory glass has the registration number etched on it and the car still has the original dealer number plates and rear screen sticker. The iconic front grille with the red surround and GTi inscription is free from damage and the square and boxy hot hatch styling from the '80s is unmissable. Being a non-sunroof model this is a desirable show stopper and a true icon delight.

INTERIOR
Simple, sparse and functional but very special with the fully reclining front sports seats finished in the red/orange/black stripe in splendid condition. All carpeting has been protected by genuine VW rubber floor mats from new and the door cards, black leatherette headlining and dash trim is in excellent condition. The iconic golf ball gear knob, four spoke sports steering wheel and classic clear instrumentation all add to the tingle of excitement. The on-board computer functions on all settings and the fuel economy gauge does not read. Door and boot apertures are incredibly clean and even the tyre pressure and fuel sticker remain attached to the driver’s side and the boot caution sticker to the tailgate is also attached. The boot area is pristine with the protection mat untorn the identification sticker on the boot cross member clear to see. Stunning.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This cult-setting car is in excellent mechanical order and really boasts what early GTi ownership should be about - tremendous fun! The 1780cc engine produces 112bhp at 5800rpm enough to sprint to 60mph in 8.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 114mph. It really drives perfectly with a distinctive, addictive exhaust note. The engine bay is beautifully original and spotlessly clean with the delicate bulkhead plastic intact with no cracks, Danger sticker to the bonnet underside attached and VIN plate secure to the slam panel. The 5 speed sports gearbox is precise and a joy to use. This hot hatch is exactly how the manufacturer intended.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
This superb Golf GTi is fitted with unmarked Tarantula alloy wheels with clear stampings visible and shod in premium Pirelli Cinturato P4 tyres measuring 175/70 R13 tyres all round with ample tread. Fitted with the large servo-assisted diagonally divided dual-circuit braking system with ventilated discs up front and drums at rear, they do an adequate job of stopping the car but fall short of modern braking systems.

HISTORY FILE
An incredible history file is presented with this stunning example. Supplied by C.S.G Pollitt Ltd, main Audi VW dealers in Exeter, to Robin Hills Systems Ltd on the 24th February 1983. The new car vehicle invoice reveals a price paid of £6,409.19 financed by Commercial Credit Co Ltd. On the 8th November 1984 the company was placed into liquidation and Commercial Credit sold the car to an ex Managing Director of Robin Hills Systems Ltd for the sum of £3,517. The car was purchased for his wife who became the second owner and remained the custodian for the next 32 years! A phenomenal neatly presented file reveals the annual service expenditure and care via extensive invoices and a service book brimmed with stamps extending to the back cover! The subsequent three recorded keepers, all VW enthusiasts and members of the Mk1 Golf GTi Club, have continued to cherish this rare example with one only selling this car and his 16,000 mile Sportline Cabriolet to fund a Series 1 GTi concours restoration.

The original VW Dealer blue document holder is also with the car and contains all the owner’s manuals and instruction pamphlets and an original 1983 brochure featuring the 1800 engine. Two sets of keys are included with the dealer leather key fob still attached!

MOT June 2023, HPI clear.
