1979 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 2 RESTORED

recently restored with only 80,234 miles from new with a fully comprehensive, stamped RR service history book, plus all the original manuals build records and wallet. Please read on if you are in the market for one of these beautiful appreciating classics.

This beautifully restored to original 1979 Ivory Silver Shadow 2 has been subject of a big restoration to a high standard with the help of renowned RR specialists, body and coachwork specialists, French polishers and rechroming specialists, it is now back to factory and ready to be enjoyed.

This car was owned by the same gentleman for the past 31 years, but sadly early last year he passed away and left the car to his family. The car had been standing in a garage unused for 19 years so after the owner’s passing the house was sold and the family just saw the RR as a non-starting old car and disposed of it in a hurry.

I purchased the car last August and after a quick look around it I decided I would get it restored as looked too good to become a source of parts. Whilst the car had no visible rust, the paint was crazed and old in places, plus had a grotty looking Everflex roof. I have images of before, during and after restoration which will be made into a photobook for the buyer. Probably have over 250 images.

This car has a rare combination of options, including headlight wipers, large headrests, rear tray tables, C-pillar motif badges, Pioneer radio cassette with equalizer, brown (VM890) leather piping to the seats, internal door handles and door pockets, beige (VM3234) colour trimmed knee roll, under dash trim and radio surround and a brown (VM890) Top Roll dash leather. There’s also a factory fitted Fiamm air horn with foot switch which is still with the car, but was disconnected during the braking system work.

When I acquired the car it had been badly painted the wrong shade of Ivory (apparently 4 shades in 1979) which became apparent when we took the door cards off and stripped out the boot. The colour it is now is the matching colour from factory. It also had a non-factory fitted Everflex roof fitted. With the help of the RREC I decided to restore this car to “how it left the Crewe factory” back in November 1979. A lot of time, effort and money has been spent on this car to make it right and it now presents in close to perfect order.  Over £15k has been spent on the restoration.

So in detail she is a 1979 (V) Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow 2, now finished in the correct shade of non-factory standard Ivory paint (9510228) over Beige (VM3234) hides piped with (VM890) dark brown piping and a Fawn (173) headlining. Carpets are dark brown (4273) piped in Beige (VM3234) leather. The interior of this car is very striking and very unique.

The car was originally supplied new by P.J Evans RR dealer in Birmingham on 20th November 1979 to a Mr Chaffe with an address in the British West Indies on registration 6146-0. The car never left the UK as far as I can tell as the first service was on 12th June 1980 at the RR Crewe Service Centre. The car went back to the Crewe service centre for the next 7 services up to 20k miles, according to the history and then to other Rolls-Royce dealers until 2001 when she was parked up. I have never seen a car with such comprehensive main dealer history. The car still has the original PJ Evans number plates which come with the car but is now on classic black plates which I think look much better.

As far as I know the car was stored in a dry garage in 2001 and not touched until 2020. The last tax disc expired November 2001 and I believe the car has remained unused since that date. Being covered and not used, the car appears to have been very well preserved with no sign of the dreaded corrosion that so many Shadows suffer from. The car still retains the original sills, panels and glass throughout. Annother reason I thought this was a good car to restore.

During the restoration I did a few bits myself such as the trim and lights removal but mainly project managed. The following new parts were used and most of them fitted by trusted RR specialist Nigel Sandell in London.

• New flexi brake pipes front and rear

List of the work done :-

BRAKING SYSTEM - Complete overhaul of the braking system undertaken by Nigel Sandell. The underside of the car was stripped and all new pipes were fitted. Remove, strip and clean brake reservoir, new brake pumps, valve heads, pressure accumulators, hard and soft flex pipes to calipers front and rear, rat trap hoses, high and low pressure pipes were all renewed at a cost of over £6k.

BODYWORK - Everflex roof, all lights, locks and trims stripped off, glass removed, block sanded to metal and resprayed by classic restorers D&B Coachworks in Surrey. The car was very straight with no rust at all, but the paint had crazed so needed removing in the most part. The car was then professionally flattened and polished to a mirror factory finish by D&B and the twin brown fine lines painted on by hand on both the body and wheel trims. Bumpers were professionally rechromed, bumper rubbers were professionally restored in black, rear bumper centre was renewed. New trim and panel clips fitted. Every component detailed prior to refitting. Front and rear windscreen rubbers replaced, boot rubber replaced. New black legal “historic” number plates fitted. The entire underneath and inside the wheel arches was Waxoyl undersealed,

INTERIOR - Leather cleaned, treated and completely refreshed using German high-quality material, door cards removed cleaned and leather refreshed, carpets steam cleaned, lambswool rugs dry cleaned. Glass polished, dashboard and door cappings stripped and re French polished professionally by Surrey Finishing,, all internal chromes polished. All internal leather roof lining cleaned and refreshed.

ENGINE – New spark plugs, leads, oil/filter drained refilled with flush oil run then drained again with a new oil filter and refilled with Castrol 20/50 Classic, new air filter, new fuel hoses, solenoid valve replaced, components detailed for appearance. Anti-freeze flushed and replaced. Gearbox cooler pipes replaced. Is going back to Nigel Sandell for an engine tune up before being sold.

WHEELS/TYRES - Wheel trims professionally polished to a mirror finish. Sitting on almost new factory correct Avon Turbosteels with 7.5 to 8mm tread depth throughout.

MOT - Even though she is registered as an Historic vehicle on the V5 and exempt from MOT, Tax and ULEZ, I am going to get it MOTd to check all is OK. Please don't assume a 40 year old car is exempt automatically, it isn't and required factory build papers to qualify as Historic.

The car comes with its full original book pack, complete factory build records, service history book, radio manual etc plus a wallet with invoices for the work, some prior history, 2 keys, jack and tools and some old tax discs.

The car is absolutely stunning to look at, drives fabulously well and stops incredibly well too. With the investment this car has had, I think you'll be challenged to find a better car in a nicer spec.

Car is located in Surrey, UK. Many more images, walk around video and detail available on request. Professional delivery can be made available, please ask for a quote.
