The Fiat X1/9 is an iconic sports car that made its debut in 1972 at the Turin Auto Show. Designed by Bertone, it was initially known as the "Fiat X1/20" prototype before its production designation changed to X1/9. The X1/9 featured a mid-engine layout and a sleek, wedge-shaped design, which was quite innovative for its time. It was powered by a range of engines, including 1.3L and 1.5L units, offering spirited performance. The X1/9 gained popularity for its nimble handling and affordability, becoming a favourite among driving enthusiasts. Production continued until 1989, with various updates and improvements throughout its lifespan. Today, the Fiat X1/9 is cherished by collectors and remains a symbol of Italian automotive design prowess from the 1970s and 1980s.
We are delighted to offer this 1979 Fiat X1/9 in Gold metallic with contrasting leatherette and cloth interior. First registered in November 1979, this is the more powerful 1500cc model which was fitted with a 5-speed gearbox.
This must be one of the very nicest X1/9s in the country and the very fact that this car still exists is something to be celebrated. That it is such wonderful condition is something to marvel at. The vendor tells us that the car was restored in 2018 and the paintwork has help up well, apart from one or two isolated areas – but this is being picky. The wonderfully period gold really pops in the sunlight. This is set off with well preserved plastic trim and a lovely black targa top. The distinctive three-spoke alloy wheels appear to have been refurbished previously and even the aluminium bumpers are in nice condition.
Inside continues the wonderfully avant-garde, Seventies look with cream leatherette highlighted with cloth inserts. Even the gear knob is futuristic, being squared off at the edges and quite clearly favouring style over comfort. The interior and dash looks to be all original and in great condition. The leatherette on the seats is in great shape with only very minimal signs of wear.
Under the engine cover, the little four pot is nicely presented without being overly-prepped.
The car comes with V5C, lots on invoices, old MOTs, brochure, and the original book pack. There are also 2 x Fiat X1/9 luggage bags which we understand were supplied when the car was new – a nice touch !
The X1/9’s designer, Marcello Gandini, has now passed away and there has been a renewed focus on his finest designs. The little Fiat is undoubtedly one of those and is often referred to as a mini-Ferrari. This example is a true survivor and we think you would struggle to find a better one.
