The Saab 96 V4, introduced in 1966, marked a significant evolution in Saab’s automotive history by replacing the original two-stroke engine with a more reliable and powerful four-stroke V4 engine sourced from Ford of Germany. This transition was largely driven by increasing emissions regulations and consumer demand for smoother, more efficient performance. The 1.5-litre V4 engine dramatically improved the car’s drivability, making it more competitive in both domestic and international markets. Despite its compact and somewhat quirky design, the Saab 96 V4 became a rallying icon in the late 1960s and early 1970s, earning victories in events like the Monte Carlo Rally under the hands of legendary drivers such as Erik Carlsson. Production of the 96 continued until 1980, by which time it had become a symbol of Saab’s commitment to engineering innovation and Scandinavian practicality.

We are delighted to offer this 1972 Saab 96 V4 in beige with brown interior. First registered in May 1972, it has had only 5 former keepers. Having been in storage for a period, it was extensively recommissioned in December 2023. Highlights of the work include:-

Full service

Rebuilt carb

Rear brakes adjusted and cleaned

New fuel hose

New fuel filter

New bulbs inside and out

New rear bumper hangers

New spark plugs

New front brake hoses

New brake fluid

Coolant

Oil and filters

The car then went to renowned Saab specialists, Two Stroke to Turbo, where the gear linkage was adjusted to improve the gearchange and the hand brake cleaned and lubricated.

Being a ’72, the car benefits from the facelift grille and oblong headlamps but still has the prettier chrome bumpers. It has had a respray at some point in a very period beige and this has stood up extremely well. It sits on steel wheels with the correct chrome trims, wrapped in matching Toyo tyres. There is some light patina to the brightwork. There are delightful little details everywhere, including some lovely mudflaps branded with Saab’s old aeroplane logo. Inside, the car is just as nice. The vinyl and suede seats present well, with matching door trims. It’s pleasing to see that the original wheel remains in situ and, with the exception of a modern power point, the dash appears unmodified. The boot is clean and the vendor has included a car cover and steering lock.

The car comes with V5C, a bundle of old MOTs going back to 2003, invoices, manual and a hefty service manual.

Saabs have always nailed that quirky/cool style and none more so than the long-lived 96 range. Whilst there’s plenty of affection for the early two-stroke cars, for most of us the V4 represents a far easier proposition, capturing those charismatic looks with the more modern powertrain. This is a lovely example being both cosmetically strong and having benefitted from the recent commissioning work. We think that 96s remain undervalued and it seems inevitable that the market will wake up to them in the future, making this the perfect time to pick up a nice example.
