 As a perfect slice of British '70s nostalgia, it doesn't get much better than a MK3 Cortina!

Launched in 1970, the MK3 Cortina was influenced by the cars Ford was building in Detroit, echoing an emphasis on comfort rather than sporting ability. Sold with three engines, the big news was the new top of the range 2-litre GXL (Grand Xtra Luxury). Identifiable by its twin headlamps, vinyl roof, comfy front and rear seats, extra external trim and additional equipment, the car soon became a sign of middle management and rising status. The GXL was a worthy successor to the previous Mk2 1600E as the halo model in the Cortina line up of the time.

This Cortina GXL is a super example which we understand has been subject to bodywork restoration in 2017/18. Unfortunately we don't have any early paperwork for the car, other than the V5C and the original Cortina handbook. The majority of invoices date from 2017, when we believe the restoration took place. There is also an invoice on file for stripping and cleaning the gearbox and fitting new parts for £300 in 2017. There are further invoices from 2023.

This Mk3 Cortina is in remarkable condition throughout and has to be seen in person to really be appreciated. the paintwork has a deep shine, and the chrome is in good condition all around. The interior is a lovely place to be. The steering wheel has an aftermarket cover fitted, and there is also a more modern tape player installed instead of a period 8 Track.

It starts on the button with a swift turn of the key and idles nicely. Autotest stated in 1970 “Ford Cortina 2000 GXL AT-A-GLANCE: New model with revised suspension, ohc engine, and rack and pinion steering. Very brisk performance, excellent economy, good high speed ride, superb steering and handling. Low wind and road noise levels. Best seats ever, ideal driving position and good visibility.”
