Sellers description

1971 Mercedes Benz 350SL

Believed to be the sixth UK supplied R107

  • Full body respray by the SL Shop in 2012
  • Winner of the Mercedes-Benz club 40th anniversary cup
  • Magazine featured

Introduced early in 1971, this impressive two-seater sports car replaced the 280SL. The body and chassis of the 3rd generation SL was considerably heavier and longer than its predecessor but still showed a resemblance to them. The front and rear axles were similar to those of the 200-250 models with independent wheel suspension using double wishbones and anti-drive control at the front and a diagonal swing axle at the rear. A four-speed fluid-coupling automatic transmission was available as an option. The standard transmission provided a top speed of 130mph and a very respectable 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. As with the previous generation SL's, the vehicle came as an open roadster with removable hardtop and went on to become one of the longest running styles from Mercedes-Benz.

This Mercedes-Benz 350SL, presented in gleaming Signal red coachwork with matching hardtop and contrasting black and grey MB Tex trim, is supplied with the desirable 350 3.5 litre V8 engine and is believed to be just the sixth R107 SL supplied to the UK and thus a very early car indeed. This SL is in very good condition mechanically and cosmetically having benefitted from a full body repaint in 2012 by specialists The SL Shop, after which makeover the car won the Mercedes-Benz Club 40th Anniversary cup in October 2012. This example also featured in Classic and Sportscar magazine in March 2008, a copy of which is included in the comprehensive history file which also boasts the original Owner’s Manual signed by Sir Stirling Moss. With prices having soared recently, this is a very usable but appreciating classic and the perfect representation of a very rare early 350 with the benefit of the V8 power unit.
