Finished in Snowberry White with a black roof and black interior, this rare Mk2 Cooper is in splendid condition throughout. The vendor has told us the Mini was first bought from Charles Clark & Sons in Wolverhampton on the 23rd August 1969 with the reg number of ‘MCY 72H’.
At some point in time, the Mini was exported to Northern Ireland where it passed between a couple of owners, before being bought by Graham McConnell in 2009. Graham was a Mini specialist, and as such he embarked on a full restoration between 2009 and 2011. We think the mileage on the Mini at the time of restoration was 34,000 miles looking at the Irish Test Certificate. The body was stripped and restored, and the engine rebuilt to Downton Tuning specification (although we have no evidence), hence the Downton badge on the boot lid.
Graham's work in Ireland is well recognised and respected, and he is probably best known for his Paddy Hopkirk '33 EJB' Monte Carlo winning tribute Mini. Clearly, the standard of his work was very high.
The mileage was zero’d during the restoration and a new 130 mph speedo fitted together with a rev counter and new auxiliary gauges in a new ‘performance’ binnacle. The Mini has only travelled 5,000 miles since the restoration.
The rest of the interior is very tidy. The front and rear seats are of the original style and in good condition, as are the door cards and headlining. There is a fire extinguisher mounted at the front of the passenger seat as well which is a nice touch, and the sports steering wheel looks great.
A straight cut gearbox was also fitted at the time of the restoration, and the front brakes were upgraded to a 7.5 inch Cooper S set up - whilst still retaining the 10 inch steel wheels shod in matching Yokohama tyres. Twin tanks were also fitted to give the impression of a Cooper S model as well.
The engine bay is very tidy with the correct air box fitted.
Whilst documentation is lacking from the Mini’s early life, the MOT certificates from its life in NI are present plus a copy of the Heritage Certificate.
The Mini performed very well for our video - it seemed responsive and well sorted.
Overall a super example that has been restored previously to an excellent standard. Don’t miss out on what is a rare Mk2 Cooper!
