Sellers description

193

One of only 3,003 made; current owner 48 years; in good running order when parked up 30 years ago; original engine and 19" wheels included; nice Winter project Launched in 1936 to replace the much-loved Midget range, the TA was the first in a series of five sporting roadsters (TA to TF) that was to keep the MG brand high on the wish list of keen drivers right up until 1955. Built around a ladder-type frame designed by MG’s gifted engineer Hubert Charles, it was larger, wider and slightly softer than the Midget but proved an exhilarating machine nonetheless. It used a modified Morris/Wolseley power train, including a Wolseley Ten-derived overhead-valve 52bhp 1,292cc engine and four-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top two ratios. With 75mph potential, it had effective hydraulic brakes to slow things down when required. Only available as a two-seater, it had a steel body fixed to a traditional wood frame with a pressed steel scuttle, flowing front wings, free-standing headlamps and a large rear-mounted external fuel tank for extended touring. A total of 3,003 TAs were produced until it was replaced by the TB in May 1939. This 1938 TA has been in the current ownership since 1971 and was used regularly until the mid-1980s when it was laid up in storage where it has remained ever since. When acquired the original block was found to be cracked so another engine of the correct type was fitted although the original engine is included in the sale, albeit in a dismantled state. Smaller 16” wheels were also fitted but again, the original set of five 19” wheels are also included. In good running order when parked up, the car is now in need of restoration but appears basically sound, the only items known to be missing being the interior trim, floor boards and exhaust which should be easy enough to replace. With top examples of this rare model now fetching well in excess of double the estimate suggested here, ELY 563 should amply reward the remedial works now required. The TA is the last of the MG range to be VSCC eligible and some enthusiastic spannering could see this one back on the road for the Summer.
