The Model B hot rod scene is a vibrant subculture within the broader hot-rodding community, centred around the iconic 1932 Ford Model B. This classic car, often referred to as the "Deuce," is celebrated for its stylish design, affordability, and ease of customization, making it a favourite among enthusiasts. The scene is characterized by a deep appreciation for the car's history and its role in the early days of hot rodding, with many builders striving to capture the spirit of 1950s and 60s garage-built racers. Whether meticulously restored to period-correct specifications or heavily modified with modern engines and suspensions, Model B hot rods represent a fusion of tradition and innovation, attracting a diverse community of gearheads who share a passion for speed, craftsmanship, and automotive history.

We are delighted to offer this “Model B” Hot Rod identified on the V5C as a 1937 Opel. Clearly, it has been fashioned after a Model B with a striking doorless body, accessed with a hop-up step and a little dexterity. An upgraded Model B type chassis has been fitted, featuring a beam front with buggy spring and four bars, Volvo disc brakes and a Volvo rear end with 4 bars. It runs on 16” steel wheels all round with whitewall tyres. Up front sits a 4.0 Rover V8 fed by an Edelbrock carb and running through a 3-speed auto box. It appears to have been built to its current specification sometime around 2015 when our vendor took custody. There are a full set of build photos and a bundle of invoices in respect of parts used for the build. Highlights of the build are the chassis being stripped and repainted, the engine painted and fully rebuilt and the eye-catching paintjob applied.

Sometimes projects like this can end up looking a little shoddy and “Heath Robinson” but this is not one of those cars. It has a wonderful stance with the bigger rear tyres and engine slung behind the front axle line. The paint is something of a work of art with wonderful, painted-on graphics and faux cracking / ageing. This is set off with shiny, orange metallic paint on the wheels and engine block. Designed to run without a bonnet, there’s no hiding the engine and front suspension, so it needs to be well presented and it doesn’t let the car down. Inside, the cream bench seat is clean and free from any obvious rips or tears.

It will come as no surprise when we say that when fired up the Rover V8 sounds like thunder. It’s hauling around very little weight and we’re happy to accept the vendors word when he says it goes like stink. Whilst it may not be the ideal vehicle for the supermarket run (although the boot is pretty big) the vendor does use it and was more than happy to drive it to our premises from his home, something which always inspires confidence.

There can be no doubt that this is a special machine that provides a great entry point into the hot-rodding community and will see you welcomed with smiles at any show or meet. By their very nature, no two hot rods are the same and we would always encourage interested bidders to come and view the car in the flesh at our purpose made facility in Cheshire so that they can make their own mind up about it.
