Offered here is a 1933 Rolls-Royce 20/25 6-light Limousine presented in Black over Claret with Claret leather upholstery. Originally starting life as a Sedanca de Ville, it was purchased by a Mr Raymond Massey, a well-known actor of stage and screen. It was first registered in London ‘ALN 909’ and we are informed that the ‘ALN’ relates to his then wife Adrianne Allen, also an actress and equally famous. It is believed that Mr Massey moved the car on following his divorce in 1939. Not much is known about the car during the war years.
Post-war, the Rolls-Royce belonged to a very outgoing Reverend in Weston Super Mare. His Bulldog used to ride in the passenger seat, from all accounts. Although the exact date is unclear, we assume it was taken to well-known coach builders Thrupp and Mabberly, to be converted into a 6-light limousine. It then changed hands to E Sargeant & Sons Funeral Directors, Slough in 1951, and Alfred William Tate, Funeral Directors in 1959 to 1966. It was common after the war to convert Rolls-Royces that had lost their owners in the war and had been laid up because of it.
It then went into private ownership from 1966 onwards, having various colour changes. Notably, £31,115 spent between 2004 and 2013 on mechanical and refurbishment, mainly completed by Mr R O’Sullivan of Stroud, an acknowledged specialist RR engineer and mechanic (most notably a new cylinder head was fitted), with invoices from Fiennes Restoration Ltd.
£25,000 was spent on external paintwork and interior leather and wood trim to its original RR standard in 2013 (excluding any labour charges). The owner in 2013 lived in Crewe, Cheshire, near the Rolls-Royce factory (now Bentley) and had the fortune to only use factory craftsmen in these key areas of work. Each and every one with more than thirty years of service in RR and Bentley. Now presented in Mason's Black over Claret with luxurious leather seating. Affectionally named “The Duchess”, this is a lovely example of a 20/25, the engine runs sweetly, and the bodywork is superb, as is the interior trim. This example has been stood since July 2024 and may require a degree of recommissioning to be fully roadworthy.
