Superb example

1933 Alvis Speed 20 SA Vanden Plas Tourer

Making its debut late in 1931, the Alvis Speed 20 was powered by a 2.5 litre engine which was a development of the 20hp Silver Eagle unit, however, in all other respects the Speed 20 was an entirely new model designed to compete in the burgeoning market for fast and comfortable touring cars capable of long distance motoring, particularly on the Continent.

The Speed 20 was available with a variety of coachwork styles, all of which were particularly attractive, especially the 4 seat open tourer by Vanden Plas.

As with previous Alvis models, the Speed 20 appealed to a discerning clientele and it’s smart and sporting appearance ensured popularity amongst enthusiastic society motorists.

This fine Vanden Plas Tourer was supplied to its first owner by the Cardiff Alvis agents,Harris & Day, on 20th July 1933. There follows a detailed history showing the car to have later resided in Cobham, Surrey, before moving to Somerset and then to Worcester and eventually to Aberdeenshire.

During 2007/8, the then owner had a full professional rebuild of the engine undertaken by respected specialists Milford Vintage Engineering at a cost of around £18,000. There are a considerable number of receipts for work carried out on the car dating back to the mid 1960’s, leaving little doubt that it has been clearly loved and very well maintained over the years.

In recent years the cars has benefited from a high quality repaint in black and additional work has included the fitment of a modern all-synchromesh 5 speed gearbox in order to make for a more relaxed driving experience on longer tours. (The original gearbox and flywheel are included in the sale.

There is a box file with all the aforementioned paperwork, along with the original buff RF60 logbook and a green Continuation Book. There are also a number of letters from the Alvis Works and from Red Triangle, plus a couple of photographs of the car taken in the 1960’s.
