1929 MG ‘M’ Type Midget 

Launched at the 1928 Motor Show, the ‘M’ Type, based on the contemporary Morris Minor, proved an instant success. Powered by the 847cc overhead camshaft engine, but now developing 20 bhp, the new ‘M’ Type was a lively performer, being capable of 65 mph - quite something for such a small car at the time.

Numerous sporting achievements boosted sales and the Midget proved its mettle in trials and on the track, with class wins in the 1930 ‘Double 12pm race at Brooklands.

This example, bearing chassis number 2M747 is one of the very first cars completed at MG’s new Abingdon works following the move from Edmund Road in Cowley in December 1929. It is in fact believed to be the oldest known survivor. The MGCC ‘MMM’ Register lists ownership back to the 1970’s and notes that the original engine (MG549A) was replaced by the factory with an upgraded unit, as used on the later models, engine number MG526A, which developed 27bhp.

There are also details of the restoration which included a new plywood body tub, along with many other items including a partial engine rebuild and retrim to original pattern. A four speed gearbox is fitted and the car has an excellent tonneau cover.   There is a current VSCC Buff Form.
